Tips for Choosing a Pro

  • Review credentials & licenses: Ensure a vendor is properly licensed and/or certified in their field (attorney bar member, certified specialties, landman certifications, etc.)
  • Ask about area experience: Inquire specifically about experience in the state(s) where your minerals are located. State law is primarily what rules in oil and gas.
  • Request references: Ask for references from previous clients. Think twice if there is any hesitation on their part.
  • Understand fee structures: Get clear information upfront about fee structure (hourly, flat fee, etc.), and what services are included.
  • Gather your paperwork: Don't forget info you may have from relatives also. If at all possible, scan and/or share electronically. Relatives can share costs also.
  • Consider specialization: Look for pros who specialize in your specific needs (royalty disputes, lease negotiations, title work, etc.). One size does not fit all.
